ALERT DAY: Sleet, snow to start Friday morning in parts of central NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The Triangle and surrounding areas will see a cold, wet Friday with northern counties expected to see a mix of snow and sleet.

With icy conditions moving in just after midnight, Friday will be a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day.

This first widespread winter storm of the season will be a clash of moisture from the southwest and cold air coming from the northwest.

Timeline of precipitation

Dry conditions are expected through midnight, however by 2 a.m. precipitation arrives in central North Carolina. As temperatures north of I-40 drop to near freezing, the rain will transition to snow, mixed with some ice pellets called sleet.
