North Carolina Specialty Hospital adds Mako Shoulder robot

Durham-based North Carolina Specialty Hospital, in partnership with EmergeOrtho, became the first facility in the state to offer Mako robotics for shoulder replacement, according to a Dec. 9 news release.

Stryker’s Mako Shoulder is in a limited market release. The system combines 3D CT-based planning with AccuStop haptics for surgeons to plan and execute personalized surgical plans.

“For me, the [Mako system] improves both our accuracy and our precision in placing the implants,” Lucas Romine, MD, a shoulder surgeon at EmergeOrtho, said in the release. “We can execute a plan preoperatively using our three-dimensional software, and then guarantee that plan gets implemented at the time of surgery—eliminating the possibility of misplacing or malpositioning any of the components.”…
