Durham man linked to stolen vehicles, fire, and safecracking in Chatham County

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has secured warrants for a Durham man in connection with a series of related breaking and entering and larceny offenses reported in the early morning hours of August 17, 2025.

Deputies responded to a residence on Lystra Preserve Drive after homeowners reported that their garage had been entered around 3 a.m. and an attempt made to steal a safe. Investigators discovered the suspects had used a vehicle stolen from a home on Lystra Road to commit the break-in. A second vehicle was later reported stolen from Rolling Meadows Lane, and a firearm was reported stolen from a residence on Zephyr Drive. The first stolen vehicle was later found burning on Miller Gap, where residents reported the fire.

After reviewing information gathered during the investigation, investigators linked Keshaun Christopher Byrd, 24, of 505 Weeping Willow Drive, Durham, to each of the reported locations. Warrants were obtained for Byrd on December 11, 2025.

Byrd faces charges of two counts of felony larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, three counts of felony breaking or entering a motor vehicle, felony breaking and entering, felony safecracking, felony attempted larceny, felony larceny of a firearm, felony possession of a stolen firearm, misdemeanor damage to real property, and misdemeanor injury to personal property…
