Durham Reports Decrease in Violent Crime by 17.9% Despite Rise in Homicides, Property Crime Marginally Down

The city has rolled out its latest crime report, detailing the shifts in local law enforcement statistics—the numbers, while silent, still resonate with the community’s pulse. According to a social media post from the City of Durham, the Durham Police Department’s Third Quarter Crime Report showed a significant downturn in Part 1 violent crime, which dropped by 17.9% compared to the same period last year.

Despite a small uptick in homicides, the overarching trajectory for violent crime—which encompasses homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault—maintains a downward slope. Tangled in the web of these statistics, Part 1 property crime also saw a reduction, albeit a more modest 2.1%. This category encompasses burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Larceny, stubborn in its prevalence, remains the chief culprit, driving the majority of property crime cases at 65.4% of the incidents.

Alongside the uptick in larcenies, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts have declined, signaling a complex landscape of criminal activity in Durham.
