Raleigh police busy with 13 crashes, heavy shopper traffic on weekend before Christmas

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As shoppers in central North Carolina entered the final weekend before Christmas, police in Raleigh reported traffic congestion and problems around shopping areas late Saturday morning and early afternoon.

By late afternoon, a crash closed lanes in Durham on eastbound I-40 near Fayetteville Road near the Streets at Southpoint Mall.

But earlier, in less than two hours before 1 p.m. Saturday, the Raleigh Police Department reported 13 vehicle crashes, most without any injuries. By 1:30 p.m., there were 17 traffic incidents in about two hours stretching back to 11:20 a.m.

A Raleigh police watch commander said officers were dealing with heavy traffic around Crabtree Valley Mall and other popular shopping spots with just four shopping days left before Christmas…
