Duke defensive end Kobe Smith was injured in horrifying fashion during Wednesday’s Sun Bowl, leaving his teammates stunned as he was carted off the field in an air cast.
Less than 10 minutes into the action in El Paso between ACC champion Duke and Arizona State of the Big 12, Smith went down in a heap after a leg-to-leg collision with teammate Tyshon Reed in the ASU backfield. A replay showed the severity of the injury, as the redshirt freshman’s lower leg appeared out of place following the incident.
Action was immediately halted and the Blue Devils soon took a knee on the field, looking on in stunned silence as Duke’s athletic trainers and medical staff began to work on their fallen teammate.
