West Duke building closes after flooding, classes relocated

The West Duke building on East Campus flooded in December and is closed to students and faculty members until further notice.

The West Duke building houses the Kenan Institute for Ethics, the department of philosophy and Duke’s Program in Education, as well as multiple classrooms. All spring semester classes that were scheduled to be held in the building have been assigned to a different classroom on East Campus.

The flooding occurred the morning of Dec. 15 when a chilled water coil ruptured in the attic of West Duke. According to a University spokesperson, the extremely low temperatures the previous night are “considered a probable cause.” The flooding mainly damaged the northern portion of the building, including several offices and classrooms…
