Duke receives $18 million to support first-generation, low-income students

Duke announced in December that it received an $18 million grant for its Low-Income, First-Generation Engagement program (DukeLIFE) dedicated to supporting first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students on campus. The gift, $8 million which came from the Sutherland family and $10 million from the Duke Endowment, aims to bolster DukeLIFE’s existing initiatives.

Although DukeLIFE is separate from the University’s financial aid system, its advising, mentorship and financial assistance initiatives are important for low income and first-generation students. Fred Sutherland ‘73 and Barbara Sutherland ‘75 envisioned the gift as part of a larger investment providing long-term support for the program.

“This new gift for DukeLIFE ensures that students do not just attend Duke, but feel that they have the resources they need to succeed and a community they can count on,” Sutherland said in a Duke press release…
