2 sent to hospital, streets closed after van hits gas meter in downtown Durham

An early morning gas leak shut down streets in downtown Durham for several hours Sunday after a van struck a commercial gas meter on a building in the 300 block of E. Main St.

Durham Fire Department personnel responded to the crash around 2:15 a.m. and found an active gas leak, Durham officials said. They determined no one was in the building and secured the area. Enbridge Gas Co. crews stopped the gas leak by 4:30 a.m., they said.

Emergency crews remained on the scene, clearing gas from the building. The area has since reopened to traffic…
