Drugmaker to lay off over 150 Durham workers

Drugmaker Merck will lay off over 150 workers in Durham as it winds down production of an HPV vaccine, the company said this week.

Some 147 workers at the plant at 5352 Old Oxford Road and seven at the 100 Rodolphe Street facility stop work by May 1, Merck said in a notice to state officials dated Feb. 24.

The Gardasil and Gardasil 9 vaccines are seeing a drop in demand worldwide, and the end of their production can be considered a “plant closure,” the drugmaker said…
