Suspect caught in VA after woman stabbed to death in Orange County home, sheriff’s office says

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — An hours-long manhunt for a North Carolina murder suspect has ended across state lines.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, 53-year-old Matthew Jared Vukmer was wanted for allegedly stabbing and killing 54-year-old Paula Floyd Friday morning at his home in the Wyngate community outside Hillsborough. He fled his neighborhood in his truck, deputies said, and was considered “dangerous.”

Later Friday, the sheriff’s office said Vukmer was caught in Grayson County, Va. around 5:15 p.m. by “an Orange County investigator serving as a member of the US Marshals Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force working with the Capital Area Regional Task Force.”

He will be extradited to North Carolina, the sheriff’s office said, and his truck will be brought back to the impound lot in Orange County for processing.

“I am proud of the work our investigators did today. Our task force agreement with our federal partners once again served as a force multiplier, allowing us to quickly apprehend the suspect,” Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said. “We know the family and friends of Paula Floyd experienced a life-shattering event today, and we continue to extend our condolences. It is our hope that they take some small measure of comfort knowing that her assailant is in custody.”…
