Duke and Durham arts welcome us back from spring break

Duke and Durham arts hit the ground running post-spring break with a host of exciting events this week.

Tuesday welcomes “Periodic Tables – Dancing Machines: The Plight of Working Human Musicians in an AI World” at Motorco Music Hall, a short walk away from Duke’s East Campus. This discussion considers the implications of AI in music production and features composer and guitarist Marc Ribot and Grammy-nominated musician Tift Merritt. The event is in conjunction with a performance by Ribot on Thursday, which will reimagine Bob Dylan’s renowned repertoire.

Duke’s MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts program kicks off its Thesis Exhibition on Thursday as well. Ranging from films and video art to printmaking, the next month is replete with talent.

Two conversations about the arts come to Smith Warehouse this week. The Rights and Humanities Annual Series hosts author Nora Krug on Tuesday to discuss “Belonging: Artist as Witness.” The following day brings academic Anneka Lenssen to explore the intersection of the arts and freedom during Iraq’s occupation from 1941 to 1945…
