Zaxby’s on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill quietly shut its doors Friday, leaving a familiar fast-casual storefront dark just a short walk from the UNC campus. The restaurant, which opened last spring, had become a go-to late-night option for students before the sudden closure.
Short Run on Franklin
The East Franklin Street outpost opened in April 2025 and was built with students in mind, featuring self-service kiosks, a Tar Heels-themed “sauce wall” and extended weekend hours, according to Chapelboro. The outlet also reported that the 2,140-square-foot space packed in 17 seats and marked its debut with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
