Back in 1958 Creedmoor had a visitor come to town that put quite a scare into locals. The headline in the Oxford Ledger ran: CREEDMOOR ALARMED AS MONKEY FRIGHTENS WOMAN. The report stated: “Otis Daniel’s pet monkey escaped from his cage. The alarm spread when Mrs. R.E. Braxton glanced up from her bean picking and saw the animal leering at her. Then the monkey started swinging by its tail hanging from a tree. Word spread and children were gotten inside and doors were locked. Some residents put bananas out to lure the monkey. It was finally caught in the yard of Mrs. Clovenia Downey.“
I am not so sure I would have enjoyed being in Granville County in the early 1940s. Of course, there was a world war going on, for one thing.
