Missing North Carolina Uber driver killed in crash on Interstate 40

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man who was reported missing in Cary last Thursday was killed in a car crash on Interstate 40 near Wade Avenue, the Raleigh Police Department said Monday.

According to police, officers received a call about a possible overturned vehicle off the roadway of the I-40 west ramp to Wade Avenue just before 4:30 p.m.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the car down the embankment and in the woods near the ramp. Police said the driver was still wearing his seatbelt when they found him. He was identified as 48-year-old Linwood Phillips.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed the car left the roadway, going at least 70 miles per hour and went airborne into the woods. Police believe Phillips died on impact, as there was “severe intrusion into the driver’s cabin” after entering the woods…
