‘Unprovoked attack’: Man accused of stabbing housekeeper to death in North Carolina denied bond

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The Hillsborough man accused of fatally stabbing his housekeeper last month was denied bond in his first appearance in Orange County court Friday afternoon.

According to court records, 53-year-old Matthew Jared Vukmer is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Paula Floyd, who investigators said was stabbed inside his Hillsborough home on March 6. Vukmer’s wife called 911 during the incident.

Floyd was Vukmer’s housekeeper at the time of the incident, authorities said. She reportedly worked for the family for several years and came to the home every other Friday.

Hours after the stabbing, deputies said Vukmer was located in Grayson County, Virginia, where he was taken into custody. He was held at a Virginia jail for a month until he waived extradition during a court hearing on Monday, allowing authorities to bring him back to North Carolina.

“It’s good we can get the process going,” Orange County District Attorney Jeff Nieman said. “That’s part of the process if somebody is in another state. It’s worked its way and we’re ready to move forward.”…
