Future Islands celebrate 20 years together by coming home

North Carolina is a crucial part of the DNA of synth-pop heavyweights Future Islands. Though they’ve called Baltimore home since 2008, the band formed in Greenville in 2006 after vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers’ previous band, Art Lord & the Self-Portraits, broke up.

Future Islands came together soon after that dissolution and the band spent their early years touring across North Carolina. In doing so they came into their own and made important connections that would help elevate their career across the state.

“North Carolina is really where we got our start,” Cashion said. “Wilmington in particular is where we got our first press as Future Islands. We loved playing there because it wasn’t far from Greenville and a lot of our friends at (East Carolina University) were from there.”…
