UNC System evaluates public universities’ financial health amid legislative budget stall

Public university chancellors are still making a case for state enrollment funding as the General Assembly deliberates the state budget. For NC Central Chancellor Karrie Dixon, the long overdue money is key to restoring and strengthening the HBCU’s finances.

NCCU was the state’s only public university to not meet a threshold the UNC System uses to evaluate its institutions’ financial health. The UNC System calculates universities’ Composite Financial Index (CFI) each spring, using financial reports from the previous fiscal year.

“As our enrollment continues to increase, growth has already contributed to improve our CFI score,” Dixon said to a committee of UNC Board of Governors Wednesday. “However, that growth must be adequately supported in order to continue addressing NCCU’s enterprise risk, expand critical student support services, reduce reliance on non-state resources to sustain growth, and maintain the university’s positive financial trajectory.”
