OKCFD reminding residents of dryer safety after apartment fire

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The Oklahoma City Fire Department is reminding residents of dryer safety following an apartment fire.

According to OKCFD, an apartment in the 3100 block of NW 150th St. caught fire due do an electric dryer.

The residents were able to make it out safely and the fire was contained to the utility room and living room. One person was taken to a nearby hospital due to smoke exposure and crews rescued a guinea pig.

OKCFD has some tips to help avoid dryer fires:

  • Clean the lint filter before or after every load.
  • Keep the dryer vent and exhaust duct clear of lint.
  • Have unusual noises, burning smells or drying problems checked before using the dryer again.
  • Turn the dryer off before leaving home or going to bed.
