Why Homeland Security told the OK County Election Board to beef up security at its offices

Security barriers are being added to the Oklahoma County Election Board offices at the request of Homeland Security officials.

The concrete barricades will be installed as election officials across the county are preparing for the possibility of violence or terrorism in the final weeks leading to the Nov. 8 election, and on election day.

The barriers will be placed out front, at the end of the office building’s long driveway off of N Lincoln Boulevard to protect election workers and voters. Early voting takes place at the office, as well as voting on election days.

County commissioners, acting as the Oklahoma County Pubic Buildings Authority, approved the placement of barriers donated by a constituent of authority Trustee and District 1 Commissioner Carrie Blumert this week.

The security measures were requested by Homeland Security officials, said Keith Monroe, director of county facilities management. Officials asked the county to evaluate the condition of the building and determine any possible threats, he told the commissioners.
