Mustang Public Schools reports first grader brought loaded gun on bus, situation resolved

A first-grade student brought a loaded firearm onto a Mustang Public Schools bus Monday morning, a district email to parents stated.

The student with the weapon got on the bus at 6:53 a.m., according to a news release from Mustang Public Schools. The weapon was shown to several students during the ride to school, and those students informed staff right away after getting off the bus at Prairie View Elementary at 7:17 a.m.

According to the email to parents, “the situation was resolved without incident in under sixty seconds” and the weapon was secured.

“We take this matter very seriously and are cooperating fully with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation,” the district email said. “Please know that the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.”

The district also reminded parents to store firearms securely and out of reach, and to talk to their children about the importance of bringing concerns to a trusted adult, as well as the seriousness of bringing a weapon to school.
