Historic Geary Tournament Sees Edmond North Edge Broken Arrow in Final Seconds

The 80th Geary Tournament once again provided drama until the very end with Edmond North turning in a spectacular final round to overtake Broken Arrow and Tuttle to claim the team title in one of the closest team races in the history of the iconic tournament. While the snow delayed the start of the tournament and forced nine teams to miss out on the oldest high school tournament in the nation, the teams that made it, treated the fans to two-days of outstanding wrestling.

Going into the final round, Tuttle had the lead with 108 points and ten wrestlers still competing. Broken Arrow had 104 points and also had ten wrestlers still alive. Edmond North was in 3rd with 98.5 points, with only seven wrestlers left in the tournament, but six of them were in the finals. The Huskies won five individual titles, going an amazing 7-1 with all of the wins being critical bonus point victories as they won the title by just 3.5 points over 2nd place Broken Arrow, with Tuttle in 3rd, 17 points behind Edmond North.

As so often happens in this tournament, the tournament wasn’t decided until the 2nd place challenge matches were completed. Going into the challenge matches, Broken Arrow had an ever-so-slim, ½ point lead over Edmond North, with both teams having one wrestler competing in the challenge matches. Edmond North’s Madden Skidmore was the man of the hour as he picked up his second major decision of the night, to give him the 2nd place finish and, more importantly, four team points to put the Huskies over the top and claim the team championship.

Edmond North, coached by Andy Schneider, got 1st place performances from Turner Ross, Devon Miller, Tommy Verrette, Joseph Jeter, and Kody Routledge, with Skidmore and Garrison Sartain placing 2nd…
