Oklahoma Highway Patrol cites safety violations after crash involving vehicle steered with vise grips

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is reminding the public about the dangers of operating unsafe vehicles after a recent crash involving a car that was being steered with vise grips instead of a standard steering wheel.

According to officials, the vehicle was involved in a collision on a public roadway. Upon investigation, troopers found that the original steering wheel had been removed and replaced with a pair of locking pliers, commonly known as vise grips. Authorities say the makeshift steering mechanism significantly compromised the driver’s ability to maintain control of the vehicle.

Under Oklahoma law, specifically 47 O.S. § 12‑201(1)(a), it is a misdemeanor offense to knowingly operate a vehicle that is in such unsafe condition as to endanger any person. Troopers have classified the use of vise grips as a clear violation of that statute…
