OKC’s $52K boulder effort fails to deter homeless as bridge remains a refuge

OKLAHOMA CITY- (KOKH) — “There used to be people putting tents and everything up here. I mean there was tents everywhere,” said Leland Blackburn.

The tents may be no more, but people experiencing homelessness are still sitting, laying and sleeping underneath the Oklahoma Boulevard bridge. This, despite the city spending $52,000 dollars to install rocks and boulders underneath the bridge to deter homeless encampments. Blackburn and his friend, Danny Johnson, said they still come there to take shelter from the elements.

“They’re trying to run everyone off, but I only come here because it’s shady and it’s cool. But, I got other places to stay though,” he said…
