Do you ever feel like you are being lied to, even though the truth is better? I spent a ridiculous amount of my Monday evening last week being told things that were not true. At the Planning Commission meeting last Monday night, there were four items that pertained to the City-owned land at Frisco and 66. The council continues to push the disposal of Yukon’s last best farm, prime for development, by asking for re-zoning, asking for a comprehensive plan amendment and a preliminary plat. Seems to me all this should be done after a developer has come to town with a plan.
But let’s not forget the most telling lie. The City Council asked the Planning Commission to approve a data center ordinance. Really? And there is no plan to bring one to town? Commissioner Craig Nuckols asked to table the item with a second, but the motion failed after a very loud discussion from the audience by the acting city manager, as Vice Mayor Jeff Wootton sat in the back and watched. Must have been important to him. The Commissioners were told there is no plan to bring a data center to that property. When in fact, the Council agenda had already been posted with a contract to sell that property to a data center. In fact, I was told more than a month earlier that they were in negotiations to do just that. Lies.
No one really knows if this is a good thing or not. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not. One thing is for sure, it takes a lot of water and a lot of power. Seems to me we don’t have enough water as it is. And what about electricity? I don’t know about you, but I sure pay an awful lot for electricity, and I don’t want to pay more. I’m pretty sure this data center won’t do without either. I think there is plenty of evidence showing these things can use as much water as a small town. If it was such a good deal, why not be honest? Why not be truthful? Why lie?…
