Grassfires blaze north of OKC due to dry, windy conditions

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – At least two grassfires started north of the metro on Sunday. Firefighters knocked them down, but the weather conditions are not ideal for fires.

“Any small spark in this condition can start a pretty large grassfire,” said Major Owen Wiggins, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

An elevated fire risk across most of the state on Sunday put many fire stations on high alert.

“People having a small fire pit that they think is not dangerous, people burning when they’re not supposed to be burning, discarded smoking products, chains on trailers sparking down the road,” said Maj. Wiggins. “It can spread very, very rapidly, especially in lower vegetation.”…
