El Paso has a lot of firsts to its credit and that includes being, at least one of, the first ‘hoods in Texas. Folks have continuously inhabited this chunk of Texas for over 300 years.
If you want to find the oldest city or town in Texas, going by todays names, you’ll find most of them closer to the Gulf. Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, is actually older than Texas itself. All the other OG’s are kinda laid out along the path of the battles that won Texas its independence.
There’s the history geek in me again … Meanwhile, over here in that west Texas town of El Paso, we’ve been rockin’ since way before Texas was Texas and we got Nacog – whatever beat by a few hundred years too.
How Old Is El Paso
El Paso officially became El Paso in the 1800’s but, peeps were hip to how cool it is here way before that. Prior to El Paso, we were Franklin, Texas. Before that, we went by El Paseo Del Norte, a name bestowed upon us by Spanish Conquistadores.
They showed up around 1692 so, yeah … we go back. It all started with the Tigua in the lower valley. who have been there, constantly and continuously, ever since.
