Report: Family sues Camp East Montana operators, alleging guards killed Cuban detainee

EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The family of Geraldo Lunas Campos, a Cuban migrant who died while detained at Camp East Montana in January, has filed a lawsuit against the detention center operators and guards, according to a report by the Washington Post.

Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban man and a convicted felon, died on Jan. 3 while detained at Camp East Montana. Initially, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported that Campos suffered an undisclosed medical emergency, later saying he attempted to take his own life.

However, as KFOX14/CBS4 previously reported, the El Paso County Medical Examiner officially ruled Lunas Campos’ death a homicide in late January, with the cause of death being “asphyxia due to neck and torso compression.” According to the autopsy report previously obtained by KFOX14/CBS4, Campos had sustained “scattered superficial abrasions” and had died after reports that Campos became unresponsive while being physically restrained by law enforcement…
