EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Sacaton Fire, burning in the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, continues to grow and remains at 0 percent containment, fire officials said Saturday morning, July 4.
The fire, which is burning 15 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico, has burned an estimated 6,782 acres. The fire started on June 21 and was caused by lightning.
Friday afternoon, the community of Willow Creek was ordered to evacuate. The fire also destroyed Apache Cabin, an historic Forest Service cabin. The cabin’s location mid-slope, coupled with intense fire behavior, did not allow firefighters to safely engage to save it, fire officials said…
