Moving on from Cesar Chavez in the Borderland, while keeping the farmworkers movement alive

El Pasoans have celebrated Cesar Chavez Day with pride for decades. but this year, the community was finding ways to honor the farmworker rights movement, while grappling with reports of sexual abuse by its most prominent leader.

At the “Viva La Causa” event that honored the legacy of the farmworkers movement this spring at the Mexican American Cultural Center, attendees were fully aware of the scandal surrounding the labor leader icon Cesar Chavez reported in the New York Times.
