EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The controversial Piedras Street reconstruction project in Central El Paso is officially dead. Following intense pushback from local business owners, the El Paso City Council voted 7-to-1 on Tuesday to indefinitely shelve the project.
The proposed overhaul would have brought major changes along the Piedras corridor near the Five Points are, including upgraded water mains, a complete road reconstruction, wider sidewalks for ADA access, and improved crosswalks and lighting for pedestrian safety.
District 2 City Representative Josh Acevedo, who represents half the stretch of Piedras Street, was the lone dissenting vote against shelving the plan. As a vocal supporter, he argued the project addressed critical infrastructure needs…
