Thousands gather at Chamizal for Mexico’s Independence Day celebration

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Thousands of residents from Ciudad Juarez and El Paso gathered Tuesday night at the Chamizal grounds in Ciudad Juarez near the International Bridge of the Americas to take part in Mexico’s traditional “Grito de Independencia” ceremony.

Civil protection and public safety authorities expected more than 30,000 people to attend the event.

The “Grito,” or Cry of Dolores, commemorates the night of September 15, 1810, when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo called on Mexicans to rise up against Spanish rule.
