EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — As heavy rain floods roads across El Paso and southern New Mexico, researchers have developed a new way to look inside hurricanes. They say the technology could eventually help scientists understand how powerful storms form and strengthen.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington developed a mathematical method called Liutex to identify vortices — rotating structures within a hurricane. The university says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration now uses the method to monitor hurricane development worldwide.
