EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — One of the state’s top officials told El Paso Republicans that Texas is a thriving state largely because of international trade with Mexico.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar was the keynote speaker Saturday night, Feb. 3 at the 38th annual Lincoln Dinner at the Starlight Event Center near the El Paso airport.
The event is a fundraiser and annual networking opportunity for local Republicans.
Hegar said he has visited Texarkana and Brownsville earlier in the week, so he has visited three of the far reaches of the state in a single week.
He called Texas a “thriving state” in large part because of international trade.
“Who is our greatest trading partner? Right across the border in Mexico,” he said. “So greater communities like El Paso and Juarez and Brownsville, where I visited earlier this week, the fact these are really important communities, as a community together on both sides of the border.”
Hegar said it is important to visit different communities across the state to hear what is going on, learn about their challenges and then leverage partnerships with state and local governments to “overcome those issues.”
