EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office released an update on Tuesday, Feb. 6, regarding the inmate death of a 57-year-old man last November at the Jail Annex.

The Sheriff’s Office says it determined inmate checks were done in the “required time frames.” However, they were not completed in the manner required by agency policy and Texas Commission on Jail Standards rules (TCJS).
The Sheriff’s Office says this was determined after an administartive investigation was done by its Internal Affairs Unit and a review by the TCJS.
The Sheriff’s Office also says disciplinary action was pending against an “involved employee” who ended up resigning from employment on Jan. 16.
The TCJS also issued a notice of “non-compliance” on Jan. 22, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“The Sheriff’s Office is in the process of strengthening office policy regarding inmate checks, as well as providing additional training to all jail staff as part of our corrective plan of action that will be submitted to TCJS. We expect that these efforts will result in the removal of the ‘non-compliance’ designation soon,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
