Eastwood, Bel Air claim runner-up spots in Region I-6A wrestling

The Eastwood boys and girls each grabbed runner-up team finishes at the Region I-6A wrestling championships in Haltom on Saturday, while the Bel Air girls were second in the I-5A championships in Canyon.

Daniela Hernandez at 132 pounds and Daniela Romo at 152 were individual champions for the Eastwood girls, two of six individual Region I-6A girls champions from El Paso who earned a berth to next weekend’s state meet in Cypress.

Franklin’s Jubilee Rendon at 100 pounds and her teammate Jayada Ramos at 145 pounds, Montwood’s Margarita Norez at 107 and Americas’ Erica Cobos at 235 were also 1-6A champions.

Eastwood’s Cayden Rios in the 132-pound division was the Troopers’ boys individual champion, joining Franklin’s Ian Abdallah (126 pounds) atop the medal stand.

The Bel Air girls’ charge to runner-up team honors in I-5A was led by Nahim Arenas, who won at 107 and Cydney Davis, who won at 152. El Paso’s other girls medalist was Hanks’ Amalie Lucero of El Paso Hanks at 132.

Those winners are part of a total of 38 El Paso wrestlers who had top four finishes in their weight class and advanced to the state championships.
