Man pleads guilty to murder, sentenced in deadly Coconuts bar shooting in Socorro

A man was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to a murder charge in a deadly shooting inside Coconuts Wing Cantina in Socorro three years ago, El Paso County court records showed.

Neftali Maymi Martinez pleaded guilty to a murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault on Feb. 8 in 120th District Court in connection with the fatal bar shooting on the night of Aug. 25, 2021, records stated.

Judge Maria Salas-Mendoza on Feb. 12 handed down sentences of 35 years on the murder case and 10 and five year sentences each on two counts of aggravated assault. Martinez will get credit for the more than two years (901 days) he spent in jail awaiting trial, court records showed.

Martinez was convicted of killing 51-year-old Daniel Almanzar and wounding a man shot in the thigh during a shooting recorded by security cameras inside Coconuts Wing Cantina, 10750 N. Loop Drive in the Fiesta Mercado retail strip.

Almanzar was described by his family in an obituary as a loving husband, father and grandfather to two grandsons.
