Soaring beyond struggle: El Paso graduate overcomes setbacks to become Texas Longhorn

A native El Pasoan has soared beyond struggle, from dropping out of high school to walking the halls of one of the most prestigious universities in the nation.

El Paso Independent School District graduate Athenas Delgado is now a Texas Longhorn, attending the McCombs School of Business , where admission to the program is one of the most competitive in the country.

“I always wanted to go to college,” Delgado said. “I didn’t always know if it was possible.”

The possibility once in question is now reality.

Delgado is working to settle into her UT Austin dorm for the fall semester. Just a few weeks ago, she packed up her things alongside her parents in the only home she’s ever known and made the 500-mile drive to the state’s capital, ready to enter the next chapter in her life.

Determination is embedded in Delgado’s character, as proven by her journey to academic success. In May, she graduated valedictorian from EPISD’s College Career Technology Academy with scholarships totaling over $1.6 million, one of the largest awards to any EPISD student ever.
