EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — As we inch closer to the winter season, El Paso Animal Services is providing cold weather safety tips for pet owners.
Provide shelter and warmth
El Paso Animal Services is urging pet owners to bring in their pets indoors at nighttime. When your pets are outdoors, they must have access to drinkable water and have a proper shelter with four walls, a roof and facing away from any drafts.
If your pet is tethered, they must be able to access their shelter and water, adhering to the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act. Using chain restraints is prohibited.
Watch for signs of cold stress
Senior pets, puppies and pets with shorter coats are more vulnerable to the cold. Try to limit their outdoor time and consider having your pets wear sweaters and booties.
If you notice shivering, anxiety or lethargy, bring your pets indoors and warm them gradually.
Beware of antifreeze and chemical hazards
Antifreeze and de-icing chemicals are highly toxic to pets. Keep pets away from driveways, garages and areas where these chemicals may be present.
