El Paso traffic crackdown nets nearly 100 driver cellphone, ‘move over’ violations

A recent crackdown on drivers using cellphones and violations of the state’s “move over or slow down” law resulted in nearly 100 traffic citations issued in El Paso County, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The citations were issued in a three-day operation focused on traffic safety in school zones and major roads on Oct. 16-18 by Texas state troopers, El Paso police, El Paso County sheriff’s deputies and county constables, Texas DPS said in a news release on Friday, Nov. 8.

Law enforcement officers issued 63 citations for cellphone violations and 30 citations for violations of the “move over or slow down” law, Texas DPS said.

In Texas, texting while driving is illegal and using cellphones in a school zone is prohibited, Texas DPS stated. Drivers under the age of 18 are always barred from using cellphones and other devices while driving. Fines for distracted driving can go up to $200 plus court costs.
