Former Five-Star Big Ten Quarterback Transfers to Conference USA

A top-15 player in the 2023 recruiting class, quarterback Malachi Nelson announced his transfer portal commitment to the UTEP Miners on Sunday.

Enrolling with the USC Trojans in 2023 and taking a redshirt year, Nelson transferred to the Boise State Broncos. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound signal-caller only saw mop-up duty in three blowout wins with Boise State. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 128 yards and one interception.

247Sports rated Nelson the No. 101 transfer portal player last year, but that ranking dropped to No. 334 this year.

The Los Alamitos native passed for 2,690 yards, 39 touchdowns and eight interceptions as a junior.

Upon his USC arrival, Nelson never met the lofty expectations in the wake of quarterback Caleb Williams ascending to the NFL. He would transfer to Boise State after one year.

Nelson lost the Broncos’ starting quarterback job to Maddux Madsen before the 2024 season. He passed for 2,714 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions as the team’s starter.
