El Paso opens warming centers as temperatures drop to single digits Wednesday

The city of El Paso and the Office of Emergency Management are taking measures to ensure the safety of residents during the first freeze of the season.

The city is offering library and parks and recreation locations as warming center options to help residents who may need a warm place to stay, particularly the city’s most vulnerable who may be looking to save on utility costs. Those seeking access to warming centers or experiencing insufficient heat are encouraged to visit a warming center or contact 3-1-1 for more information and to connect residents with support services.

A cold front will move into the region in the late hours of Tuesday, Jan. 7, bringing in cold air and strong winds, resulting in dangerous wind chill temperatures on Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds will make feels-like temperatures drop to single digits in El Paso, as low as seven degrees by 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

The OEM Strike Team will continue to travel throughout the city, assisting those who need overnight shelter.
