Borderland organization claims EPISD’s redesign is failing ‘barrio schools’

EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — Familias Unidas del Chamizal will be protesting outside the El Paso Independent School District (ISD) building on Tuesday, Jan. 21, claiming the district’s redesign is failing barrio schools.

Aside from protesting, the organization will also be holding a press conference at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, to address the school board regarding the “district’s educational neglect of barrio families,” the organization said.

The organization claims the district’s redesign “fails barrio schools and does not address the historic neglect and discriminatory practices that have hurt barrio families for generations.”

The organization also claims that the recently adopted redesign of Guillen Middle School’s ace model for barrio schools and the recent designations of the “Zones of Excellence” have been approved without “adequate parent input for critical resources and programs to address racial inequities in our schools.”…
