Dust storms hit El Paso County as warning issued on visibility and high winds

El Paso County was on high alert earlier today with a dust storm warning issued by authorities.

By 5:38 PM, the dust storm had descended upon La Union, New Mexico, barreling southwest at a clip of 25 mph. With visibility down to less than a quarter mile and whipping winds at 40 mph, travel turned treacherous.

But soon enough, as the winds calmed, the storm dissipated. “The dust storm which prompted the warning has weakened and exited the area. Therefore, the dust storm warning will be allowed to expire. Areas of blowing dust may continue to produce low visibility at times,” explained the National Weather Service.

Dust storms, or their more intense cousins, sandstorms, tend to occur in regions where the earth is a loose expanse of dust or sand. Not bound by their point of origin, these stormy spectacles can crop up over locales without any dusty or sandy soil underfoot…
