Audit reveals El Paso hotels owe $1.4 million in back taxes; city sends collection notices

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The City of El Paso is trying to recover more than $1.4 million in unpaid hotel occupancy taxes after a recent audit flagged 20 hotels that failed to pay what they owed between 2021 and 2024.

The audit presented to city leaders during a Financial Oversight and Audit Committee meeting , identified high-profile hotels including the Courtyard Downtown, Holiday Inn, and Hampton Inn among those with delinquent taxes.

“So we’ve identified $1.4 million,” said Chief Internal Auditor Edmundo Calderon. “Our recommendation is the Office of Comptroller should collect the amount owed to the City of El Paso.”…
