EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man was arrested and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury after his girlfriend’s 13-month-old son was hospitalized with a fractured skull and severe brain trauma that medical staff determined were not accidental, according to court documents obtained by KTSM on Thursday, Aug. 28.
The child was brought to Del Sol Medical Center on August 4, while in the care of the child’s mother’s boyfriend, Luis Ramon Whitson. Detectives with the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Unit were called in after hospital staff reported the boy was “seizing and posturing,” a sign of severe brain injury.
According to the arrest affidavit, Whitson told investigators the baby had a seizure but had not fallen or suffered any injuries. However, responding officers saw visible bruising on the baby’s neck, face, chest, right ear, and behind the ear.
A CT scan revealed subdural hematoma, a brain bleed on the left side of the infant’s head. The child was listed in critical condition and required emergency neurosurgery.
