A $165 Billion Data Center With El Paso Connections Up for Discussion Today In Las Cruces – Protestors Expected to Protest Electric and Water Usage Concerns

LAS CRUCES, Nm., September 19, 2025: This morning the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners are set to approve a $165 billion incentive project for a data center to be built in Santa Teresa. The proposed data center will be largest in the nation when completed and the incentives package will also be the largest incentives package in the country, if approved by the commissioners. Behind the proposed project is a company that started out with El Paso in its name and El Pasoan Miguel Fernandez.

On August 26, Doña Ana County Commissioners took the first step in supporting the construction of one of the largest data centers in the United States. Data centers are a key component to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and the internet services almost everyone uses today. Controversy around them has also risen as more data centers are built across the country.

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is building a $7.1 million data center in El Paso on 1,039 acres of land it purchased from the city in the northeast for $8.5 million in late 2023. By comparison, Borderplex Digital plans to spend $165 billion constructing its data center over the next ten years in Santa Teresa…
