Geomagnetic storm brings colorful northern lights to El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Northern Lights were visible in the Borderland on Tuesday night, Nov. 11, and KTSM 9 News received photos from our viewers showing how they lit up the sky.

According to NOAA, the Earth is experiencing a G4-Level Geomagnetic Storm, which is considered a “severe” disruption to the Earth’s magnetic field.

As increased energy and photons from the sun slam into the Earth’s magnetic field, that field acts as a deflection shield, absorbing the additional energy and protecting the Earth’s surface. As the electrons return to their normal, “relaxed” state, they emit a frequency that is perceived as red, green, or even aqua.
