City considers monthly fee to help pay for road maintenance

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso residents could one day see a new monthly fee added to their bills to help pay for street repairs, but city officials stress the idea is still in the discussion stage.

City staff are set to brief City Council on Monday, Nov. 17, about a proposed “transportation user fee,” which they say would create a more consistent funding source for resurfacing streets, preventive maintenance, and major reconstruction projects, when needed.

“Everybody in the community knows the condition of the streets is not at the level that it needs to be at,” Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer Robert Cortinas said.

Cortinas said the funding the City currently has for street work is not keeping up with the need, even with money already dedicated to repairs…
