Juarez poised to record fewer than 1,000 homicides in 2025

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – A Mexican border city often listed among the most violent in the world experienced a large drop in homicides in 2025.

With a day to go before year’s end, Juarez had recorded 928 homicides, compared to 1,102 in all of 2024. That’s almost a 16 percent decrease. The city is poised to report fewer than than 1,000 violent deaths for the first time in eight years.

“We have been trending down all year; this year is much better than last,” Juarez Mayor Cruz Perez Cuellar said at a news conference on Tuesday. “Another thing we need to say is we have lots of public events where nothing (bad) happens. I think we are on the right track and we need to continue working.”

He was referring to open air entertainment events such as the Juangabrielisimo festival in August, the margarita fest on Juarez Avenue in November and the Expogan Juarez in October. Thousands from El Paso, Juarez and New Mexico attended and weren’t targeted by criminals…
